QR ordering at the table pays off when waiting for a server is costing you tables and second rounds. Start with a few tables, a clean mobile menu with photos and a server who shows guests how it works, and time the gap from seating to first order before and after.
If you want to see what it earns first, read what QR ordering actually earns a restaurant. This guide is about how to set it up.
The pros
- Faster first order. Guests order when they are ready, not when a server walks by.
- More second rounds. The extra drink or the dessert is two taps away.
- Fewer mistakes. The order goes to the kitchen exactly as the guest chose it, notes included.
- No waiting for the bill. Guests pay from their own phone and leave when they want, so the table turns sooner.
- Servers do hospitality. Less running for orders and card machines, more time for recommendations and service.
The cons
- Not everyone likes it. Some guests will always want to order from a person. That is why it should be an option, not a rule.
- A bad menu makes a bad experience. A PDF of your paper menu on a phone is not digital ordering.
- It needs signal. If mobile reception is poor, you need guest Wi-Fi.
- The kitchen has to keep up. Orders arrive faster and closer together. If the kitchen already struggles at peak, fix its flow first.
How to start in seven steps
- Measure today’s service. For one week, note the time from seating to first order and from “the bill, please” to payment. That is your baseline.
- Build the menu for mobile. Short names, clear descriptions, photos on the key dishes, allergens, and options (cooking, sides) as buttons.
- Pick your first tables. Start with one section or the terrace, not the whole room.
- Put the code where it is seen. Fixed to the table, with one line: “Scan to see the menu, order and pay”.
- Train the floor team. Servers introduce it to the first tables of the shift and help anyone who asks. The QR code does not replace the welcome.
- Run it for two weeks. Compare the same times with your baseline, and ask the floor and the kitchen what got in the way.
- Roll out in stages. Add tables once the kitchen and the floor have found their rhythm.
